Card snapshot
What the card is built around
The American Express Gold is a consumer rewards card for people whose spending is concentrated in food categories and who want flexible Membership Rewards points. Its value is driven by two things working together: high category multipliers and the ability to use the card's statement credits without creating extra spending.
Core multipliers

- 4xRestaurants worldwide, including takeout and delivery in the U.S., on up to $50,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1x.
- 4xU.S. supermarkets, on up to $25,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1x.
- 3xFlights booked through AmexTravel.com, the Amex Travel App, or directly from airlines.
- 2xPrepaid car rentals booked through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App.
- 1xMost other purchases.

Multiplier details that matter
Restaurants
The restaurant category is global, but the U.S. takeout and delivery language matters because delivery platforms and restaurant coding can affect how a purchase is treated. The $50,000 calendar-year cap is high, but heavy dining spend should still be tracked.
U.S. supermarkets
The 4x supermarket category is limited to U.S. supermarkets and capped at $25,000 per calendar year. Warehouse clubs, superstores, meal kits, and specialty merchants may not code as U.S. supermarkets.
Flights and travel
The 5x prepaid hotel rate and 2x prepaid car rental rate depend on booking through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App. The 3x airfare rate applies through AmexTravel.com, the Amex Travel App, or directly from airlines.
Statement credits
How to value the credits
Do not add the credit face values together and subtract them from the annual fee automatically. Monthly credits should be haircut for missed months, forced purchases, delivery fees, menu markups, and partner restrictions. The most conservative method is to value each credit at the amount of spending it replaces that you would have made anyway.
Transfer partners
Membership Rewards partners make the Gold more flexible than a simple food-spend cash-back card. Useful airline paths often include Aeroplan, ANA, Avianca LifeMiles, British Airways, Flying Blue, Singapore, and Virgin Atlantic. The important rule: search award space before transferring, because Membership Rewards transfers usually cannot be reversed.
Redemption strategy
High-upside use
Airline transfers can produce strong value when award availability exists, especially for international premium cabins or partner sweet spots.
Simple use
Travel, gift cards, statement credits, and other redemption paths may be simpler, but they can produce lower value than strong transfer redemptions.
Risk control
Account for taxes, fees, transfer times, cancellation policies, and whether the cash price is something you would actually pay.
Insurance and protections
The Gold Card includes several travel protection benefits when eligibility rules are met. These benefits are useful, but they are not unlimited coverage. Pay attention to how the trip, fare, or rental must be paid for, the time thresholds, coverage caps, exclusions, and whether coverage is primary or secondary.
Optional primary rental coverage: Premium Car Rental Protection
American Express also offers Premium Car Rental Protection as an optional paid enrollment product for eligible Card Members. This is different from the no-additional-charge Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance listed above: Premium Car Rental Protection can provide primary coverage for damage to or theft of an eligible rental vehicle when you enroll an eligible American Express Card and then use that enrolled card to pay for an eligible rental.
How enrollment works
You enroll once. When you use the enrolled card to pay for an eligible rental, the premium is charged automatically to that card as one flat fee per rental period.
Coverage window
Coverage can last for the duration of the rental, up to 42 consecutive days. Washington State residents have up to 30 consecutive days of coverage.
Important exclusions
Premium Car Rental Protection is not available for rentals originating in Australia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, or New Zealand. Liability, uninsured or underinsured motorist, and disability coverage are not included.
What is not included
The Gold Card does not include complimentary airport lounge access. Amex's own travel-benefits material positions the Gold around dining, travel earning, Uber benefits, Hotel Collection access, and credits rather than lounge membership.
Fit checklist
- Your restaurant and U.S. supermarket spend is large enough to make the 4x categories meaningful.
- You can use the monthly and semiannual credits without changing your normal spending.
- You want Membership Rewards points and are willing to learn transfer partner redemptions.
- You do not need the card to be your primary rental car insurance solution.
- You are comfortable tracking category caps and credit timing by calendar year or month.
